Steve Stemler Named Small Businss Champion

State Rep. Steve Stemler (1995) has been named a Small Business Champion by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce for his accomplishments during the 2011 session of the Indiana General Assembly. Stemler received the recognition during a recent state chamber luncheon in Indianapolis.

Clarence Hulse Serving on International Economic Development Council Board

Clarence Hulse (2012), Director of Economic Development City of Jeffersonville Indiana was nominated by the International Economic Development Council to its Board of Directors for a two-year term. In the past eighteen months, Hulse has played a pivotal role in creating over 3,000 new jobs and approximately $75 million in capital investment. Through his Jeffersonville Neighborhood Leadership Institute initiative, he has developed and improved the city’s neighborhoods, winning the 2011 American Planning Association, Indiana Chapter Outstanding Community Initiative Award. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Jeffersonville Urban Enterprise Association.

Win Walker receives Champion for Children Award

Win Walker (Charter Member), along with his wife, Winnie, received the Champion for Children Award from Communities in Schools Clark County. Win has been helping students at Spring Hill Elementary with their reading for the last several years, and Winnie has been teaching a parenting class each semester for the same period.

Rita Shourds Receives Award

Rita Shourds (2004) received Personal Counseling Service’s Samaritan Award at the annual Samaritan Awards Event. This award recognizes an outstanding civic leader who epitomizes business ethics and civic involvement.

TEG Architects (aka The Estopinal Group) was awarded the “Small Business of the Year” Award by Greater Louisville Inc. This award is presented to businesses with 10-100 employees that exemplify both business and civic leadership.

This year’s competitive field boasted 1,600+ nominees and a record number of 116 candidates. A panel of 40 judges reviewed the 8 respective categories. TEG is pleased to be the winner of this prestigious award for 2011. TEG was the first Architectural firm to win the award in 2002, the first year the Awards were established by GLI. Additionally, it is also the first time that any company has won this award twice in GLI’s history.

Red Cross Names LSI Alumnae to Board

The Clark County Chapter of the American Red Cross announced the new active members of its board of directors. Among them, are the following LSI members:

Scott Carr (2009)is senior vice president in risk management at Your Community Bank. The Navy veteran has a bachelor’s degree in business finance from Indiana University Southeast.

Debbie Meyer (2010)is a pharmacist with Humana and serves as the program director for Humana’s Pharmacy Resident Program. She has a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Purdue University.

Randy Hamilton (2011)is president and CEO of Clark Physician Group. He is a licensed respiratory therapist. He earned an MBA degree from Webster University in 2006.

Crystal Gunther Joins Community Foundation

Crystal Gunther (2009) has joined Community Foundation of Southern Indiana. Crystal was a former manager for Republic Bank, Floyds Knobs branch, and brings a rich history of non-profit involvement to her new position as Grants and Program Officer. She chairs the IUS Advisory Board and Medallion Event and is a longtime member of LSI’s Board of Advisors. Crystal lives in Sellersburg with her husband and two children.

Maria Hampton Receives Leadership Louisville's Spirit of Yes! Award

Maria Hampton (2009) was awarded Leadership Louisville’s Spirit of Yes! Award at a luncheon in August. From the time she started her career as a banker, Maria has seamlessly woven her enthusiasm for the Greater Louisville community into her professional life. With her infectious smile and a let’s-get-it-done NOW tenacity, Maria and her extraordinary way of working with people has carried her into all corners of Kentucky and southern Indiana, from troubled neighborhoods to executive board rooms.

Regardless of where she is, Maria is there to make a difference. She has leveraged her Leadership Louisville experiences to create positive change in all that she does. Maria was a member of the Leadership Louisville Class of 1990, a Bingham Fellow, a member of the Board of Directors including treasurer and along with her daughter, Gretchen, a dynamic duo keynote team for the 100 Wise Women series.

In short, Maria brings to life the Spirit of Yes, the gold standard of community trusteeship that’s at the heart of the Leadership Louisville Center.

Kent Lanum Receives Gold Leaf Recognition

Kent Lanum was awarded a Gold Leaf pin by Mark Eddy during the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on June 3rd at Northside Christian Church in New Albany. Lanum is the board chair for Leadership Southern Indiana. The event was hosted by Community Foundation of Southern Indiana.

Gary Banet Named to the Board of the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana

LSI Alumnus Julie Garrison joins VIA Studio

VIA Studio, a Louisville, Kentucky based marketing and web design firm, announces the hire of Julie Garrison as Vice President of Marketing and Sales. Garrison comes to VIA from Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services in New Albany, Indiana where she was the Director of Marketing a Public Relations for 10 years. She is a graduate of Indiana University and earned her MBA from Webster University.

Class of 2009 Service Project Helps United Way

LSI’s class of 2009 set a pretty lofty goal for their class project. The project – to create a web site that would serve as an online volunteer connection – became a partnership with Metro United Way, who already had a similar project in the works.

The website connects volunteers and agencies in need in two ways. Nonprofits who desire volunteers can post their need on the site and interested individuals and groups can go on the website and browse a list of the volunteer opportunities available.

The website also has a platform called GiftMatch. There, individuals can post small or large items they want to get rid of and the Metro United Way volunteer department will connect the individual with an agency in need of the item.

"We want people to know it is out there," said class of 2009 member Scott Carr. "We want people to know what is available to them and to be aware of the organizations in the community that are looking for people to volunteer, so they can continue their mission to help serve in the community. Also we want people to know their junk may be treasure to an organization in need."

LSI Class 1996 Graduate - Wayne Estopinal to serve his alma mater

Jeffersonville architect and business owner R. Wayne Estopinal was named to the Board of Trustees at Ball State University on Tuesday.

Estopinal, along with Richard Hall, a partner at Indianapolis-based law firm Barnes and Thornburg, were appointed as trustees by Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels. The term for the appointment is set to last four-years and begin Jan. 1.

Estopinal acknowledged the honor and importance of returning to serve his alma mater, which he said he has been working with for the past 20 years.

“Without the education I got at Ball State, my life would be very different,” he said.

Estopinal earned bachelor’s degrees in architecture and environmental design from Ball State in 1979 and a decade later he founded the Estopinal Group with his wife Thresa, according to a press release. His appointment succeeds Thomas L. DeWeese, a partner with the Muncie-based law firm of Cross, Marshall, Schuck and DeWeese, who retired after serving as a trustee for 24 years.

With his appointment, Estopinal said he is in a unique position to continue to advance the mission for Ball State. He said it is because he graduated from one of the university’s most respected colleges — the College of Architecture and Planning — and extends the reach for the university as he represents the southern part of the state.

“[It] gives me a real ability to continue to give back in a lot of areas,” he said of his appointment.

The goal while serving as a trustee is to allow the institution to continue on its current path, he said.

“To continue the academic improvement the university has been going through,” he said when asked of his goals. “It’s truly a transformed university.”

Estopinal said the changes that have occurred over the past five years have been tremendous and encouraged anyone who hasn’t visited to go back for a visit. He added that much of the credit should be directed to Ball State’s President, Jo Ann Gora, who he described as a very dynamic leader and that the university certainly reflects her involvement.

“[It’s] a real success story for the state,” Estopinal said.

Daniels’ other appointment, Hall, also earned a bachelor’s degree from Ball State and is serving his second term as a trustee.

Frank Heinz named 2010 Servant Leader.

Frank Heinz, President of H&H Designs in New Albany, Indiana was named as the 2010 George Lane Servant Leader recipient for Leadership Southern Indiana. The award recognize individuals that have unselfishly provided their leadership and resources to the betterment of the surrounding communities that LSI serves and operates.
